This is not about the characters or producers but how the audience takes the text. These issues are far more bigger then this show. This is a stereotype that black men are very aggressive and practice infidelity. I think this is a bad interpretation of how young men act some do not have sex or want o have sex. It seems like the teen boy in this show only want one thing and have no personality. They are constantly going after numerous girls or having a girlfriend. The world needs to empower young ladies and assure them that they are beautiful that they no matter their appearance.Īll of the boys in the high school are made to look as if they have a huge sex drive. I think it is wrong how they down play Spirit as not being pretty because she is a little heavier. Rather, it is a positive source of pleasure in a relationship, or a means of her empowerment in a patriarchal world” (Fiske 473). Fiske talks about this by saying“A woman’s sexuality does not in television result in her objectification for the male.
Briana is also always the one getting attention by boy and when spirit gets attention it is because someone wants to sleep with her or her friends really do not believe that she has a boyfriend or boys like her. The main character Briana ‘s best friend Spirit is a heavier, or curvier teen, this gives more of teen girls watching the show something to relate to.
So this television show is not universal.This show has a variety of shapes and sizes of female teens.
The majority of the people in the first episode are black. In the high school that she is in there is not a wide variety of races. This was touch on in lecture saying “ we think about adolescents as flighty, emotional, unserious, and adults-in-the-making.”(lecture) During this journey she is made to seem very boy crazed and sexualized. In going to live with her father she meets Spirit and Arnez which become her best friends. Her mother had her at a young age and now has sent her to live with her father so she can start a career. This show consists of a young girl living with her single father. One on one is an African American sitcom that is very stereotypical.
